A few posts ago I wrote, and warned readers about the effects the budget would have on the real estate market. Sure enough a day later the budget was passed. Instead of complaining about the problem, I took action and wrote to my local MPP Michael Bryant (A Liberal). My letter can be viewed here.
Fast forward a week and here is his “Constituency Assistant” (Paul L. Nichols’ response):
Dear Mr. Savel:
Thank you for your email; our office appreciates you taking the time to write to us regarding the 2009 Ontario Budget. This Budget is focused on making Ontario stronger and more competitive by creating jobs now and preparing the Province for future growth. Comprehensive tax reform is a vital part of meeting both of these objectives.
The comprehensive tax package will move Ontario in line with four Canadian provinces and more than 130 countries who have adopted a value-added tax structure. The value-added tax structure is more efficient than a retail sales tax and will enhance the ability of Ontario businesses to grow.
With regard to housing market, the Budget acts to support new housing. Newly constructed homes under $400,000 would not be subject to an additional tax burden. In addition, buyers of new homes valued between $400,000 and $500,000 could also claim a proportional rebate.
This Budget proposes $4.5 billion in tax cuts for businesses over three years and an income tax cut for 93% of all Ontarians. Overall it positions Ontario to become more competitive for a more prosperous future.
Again, thank you for taking the time to share your concerns with us. Should you require any additional information or assistance please do not hesitate to contact our office.
Yours truly,
Paul L. Nichols
Constituency Assistant
Office of Michael Bryant, M.P.P., St. Paul’s
At least they acknowledge that it is in fact “an additional tax burden” (3rd paragraph). It’s GOOD that they have a few breaks but it would be GREAT if they had no extra tax at all. My readers out there can voice their opposition to the HARMonization by clicking here. You’ll be re directed to an Ontario Real Estate Association run website, that’ll allow you to email your MPP a letter opposing this mess of a budget!
