The east end of Toronto’s waterfront is rapidly changing! Once finished, Pier 27 will be a predominate jewel on the condo crown that outlines the waterfront… but those days are still a while away, so until then let’s look at what Cityzen Developments has built thus far! Below is an update (with photos) from their official blog:

Though it may not look luxurious now, Pier 27 will be screaming prestige at Yonge and Lakeshore in the future.

We visited the Toronto Waterfront site late last week and the progress made since our last visit this past November has been substantial to say the least!

Check out some of our photos below. For a full album of construction shots check out our Facebook album here.

This summer, I was fortunate enough to go out on the lake, not once…but twice! The majority of my travels took me along the shore of the waterfront, from the Royal Canadian Yacht Club in the East to Snugs Harbour Restaurant in the West (Port credit). During both trips I was absolutely amazed at how beautiful Toronto is shaping up to be! It’s hard to appricaite the beauty of the City while driving through it…but from the outside looking in, I got a TOTALLY different understanding!

So where am I going with all of this? The Ford’s should be doing the same… looking at the waterfront from a different view. While researching for the <a href="http://savelblogs.com/river-city-phase-2-by-urban-capital"target="_self"title="Purchase at River City" >River City development I learnt a lot about Waterfront Toronto and it’s role in redeveloping the Lower Dons area (You can read all about their mandate and plans here). The most important thing to note is that Waterfront Toronto is made up of all three levels of government…meaning all three would have to agree with the plans Doug Ford has proposed. I also learned that: “Waterfront Toronto has a 25-year mandate to transform 800 hectares (2,000 acres) of brownfield lands on the waterfront into beautiful, sustainable mixed-use communities and dynamic public spaces.” And based on my own talks with people about Dougs plans… it’s looking like the majority aren’t that excited for his mega malls and Ferris wheels.

That being said, I think Mr. Ford would be much better off coming up with a proposal to give Torontonians (and the thousands of visitors we get each year) the opportunity to take in the City from water looking in instead of from the City looking out. As beautiful as our sunsets are… there isn’t that much to see besides water and sky!

So here’s what I propose… Put something on the water that allows people to look INTO the CITY from the WATER!!! It doesn’t have to be some sort of futureistic, 10 billion dollar water pod either. It could be as simple as a bunch of large ships/barges perminintly docked out on the lake and connected together! The boats can feature a variety of attractions such as (now hold your breath for this one) a casino, a night club…or dare I say, a mall! As an added revenue generating service, the city can run water taxis out to it (or licence it to the private sector). Heck, since I’m on a roll…why not build a good ol’fashion, Florida inspired monorail directly out to the ships for year round service!

Something like this would be soooooooo much faster to create and a lot less messy than redoing all the work Waterfront Toronto has put forth. Plus, they’ll be creating a legacy for themselves by thinking outside of the box and offering the City something truly different than what anyone else has proposed!

I leave you with some more photos from the Lake and encourage you to come with even more possibilities… be sure to leave your thouhts in the comment section below!
